Prolonged Exposure

Prolonged exposure is a therapeutic approach for treating trauma-related disorders that helps people confront memories, feelings, and situations they have been avoiding. Through repeated, structured recounting of traumatic memories and gradual facing of feared situations, clients learn that reminders of the trauma are distressing but not dangerous, which reduces avoidance and diminishes the intensity of traumatic reactions. Typically delivered in a safe, supportive setting with a trained clinician, prolonged exposure combines imaginal exposure (revisiting the memory in detail) and in vivo exposure (engaging with avoided activities or places), along with processing of the experience. Evidence shows it can significantly reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and improve functioning, though it requires commitment, careful pacing, and skilled guidance to manage distress during treatment.
